Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of your mouth, teeth and smile. This includes changing tooth colour, adjusting tooth size, contouring the gums, restoring fractured edges and realigning the teeth using prosthesis.
1. Veneers: Refers to use of ceramic resolve numerous cosmetic problems, ranging from crooked teeth, to cracked or damaged enamel to noticeable gaps between two teeth to changing the tooth colour. The veneer is then bonded to the tooth using a dental adhesive.
2. Whitening: Involves changing the tooth colour to a whiter shade of white. Can be done by masking, veneers, crowns, bleaching or scaling and polishing incase the discolouration is caused by tartar. The method to be used for whitening is determined by the degree of stains, cause of stains, age and costs involved.
3. Masking: Involves use of a thin layer of white filling material on top of the natural tooth so as to give it a whiter colour. The procedure may involve slight trimming of the natural tooth to accommodate the extra layer of filling. Realignment of teeth using braces can also help improve cosmetics.
4. Crowns: Involves use of a ceramic to cup up the tooth. This can help to close gaps, alter shape or change the colour of the tooth.
